Do you ever change your username on WordPress?

Don’t be shy, is your current WordPress username “admin”?

When you set up your WordPress website, unless you  specify something else, WordPress chooses “admin” or your email address as your username.  Those are bad usernames because if someone wants to hack your website, the first place they’re going to try is your login screen and the very popular username “admin”.

That’s basically doing 50% of the job for hackers and they know you’re too busy DIYing your website to be bothered with changing your username.

Before showing you how to change your WordPress username let me give you a couple of examples of other bad WorpdPress username:

  • Child’s name.
  • Birth date.
  • Favorite pet’s name.
  • First boyfriend’s name (Please don’t! Why would you want to be reminded of him every time you log into your website? ).
  • Your first car make and model.

I know you’re busy and you’d rather not deal with this right now but this kind of oversight is what ends up costing you a lot of frustrations in the future.  5 minutes of your time is well worth it wouldn’t you agree?

How to change your username.

  1. Create a new username.
  2. Assign the new username the role of administrator.
  3. Log out and log back in as the new username you created.
  4. Delete the “admin” username.
  5. Attribute all content to your new username.
  6. Confirm deletion.
  7. Done.

    Thanks for this tip Webly. It is the simplest things like this that can get us into hacker territory. I LOVE your comment about not using an old boyfriend’s name.. great reason not to.

    You can never warn people too many times about using “admin” or other common user names. Some just have to learn the hard way, but you can’t say you didn’t warn them.
